Week 1 9/21 - 9/28 Post an introduction to the Introductions conference. Return in a day or two and respond to a fellow classmate's introduction. (conference/participation points)
  • Read through Chapters 1-5 of our text book to refresh your memory on HTML and XHTML parameters.
  • Read the CMST386 Additional Needs main topic posted under Week One conference.
  • Post a response to the Downloads Response main topic under Week One conference. (conference points)

I believe that discussing Web Page Design before jumping to far into the coding just makes sense. So, we are going to move to Module 5 before the others.

  • Read Module 5 "Web Page Design" under COURSE CONTENT (at the menu on your left).

  • View the "Planning Your Project" PowerPoint presentation under our Week One conference.
    Prepare a topic statement and flowchart of your proposed Web site project--submit under assignments. Review Analysis of Web Site Purpose worksheet as you plan your site (This topic statement and flowchart is not due until the end of Week 2--but don't wait too long to get started.)

  • Review the "Good and Bad Web Sites" conference topic and post your response. ---Table or Frames? ---

Week 2 9/29-10/05 TOPIC: Setting up student Unix accounts on the Nova server and understanding design flaws
  • Read the Conference materials and set up your Nova account, make a  www directory, and set its permissions.  --  results will be seen online

  • Read Module 1 "What is XHTML?" under COURSE CONTENT (at the WebTycho menu).

  • Write and upload your beginning index.html page -- Minimum default-page Requirements: this beginning page must have a background (color or image) and your name inside the page. After 10/12 you may make changes to this page, so it coincides with your site plan; this assignment's purpose is mainly to check your Nova account permissions and I should have them all graded by 10/12.

  • Validate your XHTML coding through the WC3 validator (http://www.w3schools.com/xhtml/xhtml_validate.asp) -- post your uploaded page's URL and a screenshot of its successful validation to WebTycho assignments.

  • Read textbook chapter 7: Working with Cascading Style Sheets
  • Read Module 2 "Cascading Style Sheets" under COURSE CONTENT (at the WebTycho menu).
  • Review the posted lectures in WebTycho Week 3
  • Complete the Tutorial 7 exercise as you are stepped through from pages 347 - 406.
  • Upload the complete files from Tutorial 7 (completed on page 406 "samples.htm") to your Nova www directory and submit the URL to the WebTycho assignments.

  • Post an example of your own CSS. This must include at least four different tag settings and each must be used in the page where you are showing it as an example.
  • Submit in the "Your CSS" conference topic: copy your CSS code into the conference window and explain what your settings do. Then provide the URL to your example.

  • Complete the guestbook form and upload it to your Nova account (inside your www directory).
  • Submit your guestbook URL to the WebTycho assignments.

Week 6  10/27-11/02 Forms -- CGI form
  • Continue reading textbook chapter 6: Creating Web Page Forms
  • Read the WebTycho lecture on using CGI (Common Gateway Interface) programs to automate forms.
  • Begin researching CGI scripts that may work for your project.
  • Create your cgi-bin in Nova.
  • Write your new form and begin adjusting your CGI script to make it work with Nova.

Week 7 11/03-11/09 Forms -- CGI form
  • Ask questions! Remember that your CGI script will only work with specific form parameters that match your form.
  • Upload your scripts into your cgi-bin and upload your form. When it is working, submit the URL of your form to WebTycho assignments.
  • Submit your form URL to the "Your CGI script" conference topic. Explain where you found the script and what you had to do to make it work.

  • Read textbook chapter 10: Working with JavaScript
  • Read Module 3 "Javascript" under COURSE CONTENT (at the WebTycho menu).
  • Review the posted lectures in WebTycho Week 8
    • Upload the complete lecture files to your Nova www directory and submit the URL to the WebTycho assignments.

  • Begin researching Javascripts that may work for your project.
  • Upload a Javascript you wish to use and submit the example to the WebTycho conference titled "Your Javascript"
  • Along with the URL showing the example, explain where you found the Javascript, what it does, and any changes you had to make to it to make it work on your page.

Week 10 11/24-11/30 TOPIC:  PHP and Multimedia
  • Read Module 4 "PHP" under COURSE CONTENT (at the WebTycho menu).
  • Discuss the PHP Tutorial at http://www.htmlgoodies.com/php/index.html  
  • Complete one of the examples of a PHP shown in Module 4, under the PHP Setup section.
  • Submit your completed PHP example to WebTycho assignments.
  • Read textbook chapter 8: Using Multimedia on the Web; and start thinking about a multimedia file that would you would like to include in your project. Be sure to have either your own files or permission to use the files you choose.

  • Read textbook chapter 8: Using Multimedia on the Web; and start thinking about a multimedia file that would you would like to include in your project. Be sure to have either your own files or permission to use the files you choose.

  • Complete the Review Assignment on pages 471-473. Submit the URL of the completed page to WebTycho assignments.
