REQUIRED TEXTS:

Botello, Chris. Adobe InDesign CS2 Revealed. Deluxe Education Edition. Boston, MA: Thompson, Course Technology, 2006.

Williams, Robin and John Tollett. Design Workshop. Berkeley, CA: Peachpit Press, 2001.

RECOMMENDED SOFTWARE:

Adobe InDesign and a graphics software program are recommended, but not technically required for purchase. They are available for students to use at the UMUC computer labs.

All computer-generated assignments must be submitted in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). PDF files preserve the original appearance of documents and enable you to distribute them for viewing and printing on any system. Students will need Adobe Acrobat's Distiller or PDF Writer to generate PDF files. Acrobat Distiller/Writer comes with the full Adobe Acrobat program (not the free Acrobat Reader) and it is also available to students at the UMUC computer labs.

In addition to the Adobe PDF services, other companies offer freeware and free online resources to make PDFs:

The data below is for your information only --I do not guarantee these prices, nor do I endorse any of these companies. If you have any purchasing resources to share, please post them to our General Questions conference area. :-)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Attendance

xBy registering for a Web-based course, you have made a commitment to participate in your course conferences as well as other online activities. To contact your instructor, please use the conferencing software or e-mail links provided, which allow you to communicate with the instructor and your classmates in a virtual classroom, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Please plan to participate regularly. You will note in the grading policy that your online conference participation counts toward your final grade.

You are required to participate in online conferencing, do hands-on assignments, complete a Web site project, and take a proctored final examination. The exam will cover, at a minimum, your course modules and your reading assignments. The examinations will consist of true/false, short answer, and matching questions.

You will be assigned self-assessment questions so you can test your understanding of the various concepts. Online conferencing questions provide interaction with other members of the class. The material in both the self-assessment and online conferencing questions often finds its way into the final examination. Answers to self-assessment questions are provided online. The computer conferencing questions will be answered in the online conference, much as they would in classroom discussion.

Use the course schedule in your syllabus as the basis to determine due dates for various course requirements.

xKEEP A COPY of all of your assignments, ideally as both a hard copy and electronically, but definitely electronically. Be aware that if you keep a back-up on your computer and your computer crashes, you have lost your back-up also. Keep your back-up files separate from your main files.

xA MID-TERM and FINAL exam will be required. We may also have various quizzes relating to reading assignments, terminology, and course concepts.

Academic Integrity

Students at UMUC are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will contribute to the maintenance of academic integrity. Failure to maintain academic integrity (academic dishonesty) may result in disciplinary action.

xCheating will not be tolerated in this class. You are expected to do your own work. If an assignment you have turned in for this class has been posted on the Internet, received from a student in a previous class, or taken from any other individual, you may forfeit your ability to complete the course. Similar responses may be expected for copying exam questions or using “cheat sheets.”

Academic dishonesty includes but is not limited to obtaining or giving aid on an examination, having unauthorized prior knowledge of an examination, doing work for another student, and plagiarism.

Plagiarism is the presentation of another person's idea or product as one's own. Plagiarism includes (but is not limited to) copying verbatim all or part of another person's work; using phrases, charts, figures, illustrations, computer programs, or mathematical or scientific solutions without citing the source; paraphrasing ideas, conclusions, or research without citing the source; and using all or part of a literary plot, poem, film, musical score, or other artistic product without attributing the work to its creator.
