Introduction will be posted in our WebTycho "Announcements" section and assignment guidelines will be posted under each week in our WebTycho "Conferences" section.

Conference discussion: (this is you) personal introductions and responses. We will discuss your DTP experience, our class syllabus, and the course guidelines. Return to respond to someone else's introduction (you should have one response to the DTP software conference and at least two responses posted to the introduction conference by midnight on Monday, 1/29) Due by midnight at the end of Week 1

HMWK:

  • Read Ch. 1 in Robin Williams' Design Workshop
    (pp.1-14)
  • Read the first half of Module One (under Course Content / Course Modules)--read Module One "Commentary" up to "Principles of Good Design."
  • Respond to the introductions conference
  • Respond to the software conference
Week 2
1/30-2/05
Conference discussion: Take the online DTP terms quiz and respond to that conference topic.

Review the PowerPoint lecture: on The PC is not a Typewriter and post an example of an error that slipped through the editing process and ended up getting published.
Due by 11:59 p.m. at the end of Week 2

HMWK:

  • Finish reading Module One: "Principles of Good Design"
  • Read through the Chapter 1 "Exploring the InDesign Workspace" from our Adobe InDesign textbook.
  • Respond to any required WebTycho conferences.
Week 3
2/06-2/12
HMWK:  Now let's start with a simple desktop publishing project: "Working With Text" from Adobe InDesign CS2 Revealed."

TO TURN IN: Go through Chapter 2. Follow the steps beginning on p. 2-1 through 2-19. Run spell check on the document (explained on p. 2-29). Save your document and transfer the document into a PDF.

TO TURN IN: Then make the revisions suggested by your "clients" from page 2-35 (using file 2-8). Run spell check on the document (explained on p. 2-29). Save this document and transfer the document into a PDF.

Conference discussion: Typography, Documents, and Flyers

  • Read Chapter 14: "Flyers" from Design Workshop

  • Read Chapter 3: "Setting Up a Document" from Adobe InDesign CS2 Revealed
  • Take Quiz One -- available online in conference link

TO TURN IN: Complete Chapter 3 lessons from page 3.10 - 3.49. (Files and directions are available in the Week 5 conference area.)
Submit the "setup" document in its completed software format and as a PDF to the WebTycho assignment area.
Due by 11:59 p.m. at the end of Week 5

  • DTP Presentation posting is due this week
  • You are also required to thoughtfully respond to each student presentation posted. This follow-up response posting is not due until the end of Week 15.
  • Read Chapters 4 and 5 from Design Workshop
  • Respond to any required WebTycho conferences.

  • Read Design Workshop - "Logos," Chapter 6, pages 87-102 and "Fonts in this book," pages 272-273, and "Designers & the design process," pages 233-267.

TO TURN IN: "Designer Exercise" on p.150 of Design Workshop
Follow the directions on p.150 of our Design Workshop text. Collect at least three advertisements. Follow each advertisement with a written explanation of the design principles used noting what "works" and what doesn't based on the principles of design: proximity, alignment, repetition, contrast, and white space.

You will need to scan (or copy if from a Web site) each advertisement into your report (explanation) to turn in as a Microsoft Word (or Publisher, if you wish) attachment to the Assignments area of WebTycho "Critique."

Due NEXT WEEK by 11:59 p.m. at the end of Week 12
