CMST310 Desktop Publishing
Project Descriptions

Learning through doing is the method of this course. In addition to your conference participation and quizzes, you are expected to successfully complete assigned projects and also critique the projects as assigned.

Some of these projects use files from the Adobe InDesign CS2 Revealed textbook. Alternate files in Publisher 2003 have been made available if you are unable to purchase InDesign CS2 or unable to go to one of the UMUC computer labs.

 Published error example

Review the PowerPoint lecture: on The PC is not a Typewriter; based on the information provided, find an example of an error that slipped through the editing process and ended up getting published.

Post a response to the WebTycho conference explaining what and where the error is.

If the example you find is from a printed source, you will need to scan the information and post the image or PDF as an attachment in your WebTycho response.

If the example you find is from an online source, you may provide the link to the source, but clearly explain where the mistake is located.

For my example, click on the link below to see a PDF of an actual flyer that was posted in a stairwell of an apartment where I used to live. Although the graphics of the flyer are cute, the text errors are extreme. You should see eight errors:

Flyer example
  • misspelled "occupents" instead of "occupants"
  • possessive "fee's" used for plural "fees" (three times!)
  • misspelled "payed' instead of "paid" (twice!)
  • misspelled "your" instead of "you're" (twice!)
Submitting Your Assignment
To complete this project and receive full credit, you must complete the following activities:

1. Post your explanation of the published error example to the conference.
2. Attach the error example to the conference as either a PDF or Microsoft Word attachment.

Due Date: 2/05, 11:59 P.M. Eastern Time
No Late Assignments will be accepted.

DTP Presentation--topic proposal & Student Presentation

As you work through your vocabulary worksheet (previous assignment--above), keep track of any special web resources that help you. For this exercise you must find a Desktop Publishing (DTP) related article.

When you choose an article to review, be sure it is written in enough depth and detail so you have something to write about. The minimum required length for your presentation is 1 page, single-spaced.

After you read the Main Topic titled  "DTP Presentation Guidelines," (this is a separate conference under your WebTycho menu) submit your chosen topic in that conference by Creating a Main Topic. Please be sure and change the subject line to correspond with the subject you will present.

Requirements:
Your DTP Presentation topic CANNOT be one already chosen by one of your fellow classmates, so you must check what has been posted and you may want to post yours early :-) Also, you must check back to see if your topic has been approved.

Running Close to the Deadline? Please do not wait until the last minute to submit your assignment. Give yourself at least a 1-hour window to account for any technical difficulties that may arise. If you do experience problems and the deadline is looming, immediately send me the assignment via e-mail (whume@umuc.edu) which will serve as your timestamp. Also contact WebTycho Help and Support for assistance ASAP. -- Don't make a habit of doing this! This is for emergency situations only and still requires you to submit your work in WebTycho once your technical problems have been overcome.

 Designer Critique Exercise
"Designer Exercise" on p.150 of Design Workshop
Follow the directions on p.150 of our Design Workshop text. Collect at least three advertisements. Follow each advertisement with a written explanation of the design principles used, noting what "works" and what doesn't based on the principles of design: proximity, alignment, repetition, contrast, and white space.

Prepare your document in your desktop publishing software. You will need to scan (or copy if from a Web site) each advertisement into your report (explanation). Once you are finished, "print" your file as a PDF and submit the PDF file attachment to the Assignments area of WebTycho titled "Critique." (The PDF version will reduce the file size allowing you to submit it in WebTycho.)

Submit your finished document as a PDF to the Critique assignment in WebTycho.

Product Package
  1. Choose a product that your company produces. You will be designing 4 sides of a box that packages this product - the front and back and the 2 sides. It is not necessary to include the top or bottom of the box in your design.
  2. Page sizes: front and back at 6 ½ x 9 ¾ inches and 2 sides at 2 x 9 ¾ inches. These dimensions will require you to create Custom Page Sizes.
  3. You will need to create 2 separate files. One file with two pages will be your front and back. The second file with two pages will be your sides.
  4. Your design must include a logo for your organization or corporation.
  5. The four sides must be different from each other. For example, the 2 side panels should not be the same design. You should not leave any side blank but include a design for all 4 sides.
  6. Orientation: Portrait or Landscape
  7. Suggested Margin Guides: Usually ¼ inch for top, bottom, left, and right margins. Please bleed your design to the edge and do not leave a white frame around your design.
  8. Include graphics and include some text that you write yourself.

Submit your finished document in its completed software version and as a PDF to the ProductPkg assignment in WebTycho.
