Autoflow text
Page 4-41 Adobe InDesign CS2 Revealed

Microsoft Publisher directions:

The Autoflow text assignment beginning on page 4-41 uses Adobe InDesign CS2 and Adobe Illustrator. As an option for this class, you may be using Microsoft Publisher 2003. I've created alternative files for you to use. They are available at the links below.

DIRECTIONS (translated for Publisher)

  1. Download the files linked above and save them to your computer.

  2. Open PUB4-6.pub and save it as Autoflow.pub

  3. Select the first page icon (at the bottom of the screen) to make page 1 active.

  4. Create a textbox below the title text, as shown below:

5. Select INSERT from the menu toolbar and select Text File. Navigate to the drive and folder where you saved your files, then select Windmilltext.doc.
Select "NO" to allow the text to autoflow.

6. Create another textbox to fill the right column of page one.

7. Click on the first column and select the linking button on the standard toolbar (it looks like a paperclip).

 8. Once the linking button is clicked, the mouse pointer will change to a loaded cup icon.

 9. "Pour" the cup into the full column on the right of the page.

10. Go to page two and draw two more textboxes covering the two columns on that page.

11. Return to page one. Click on the right column of text and select the textbox link button. Go to page two and "pour" the text into the first column on page two.

12. Continue this process until you reach the bottom of page six. Draw full-length columns even over the top of the images on pages four and five.

13. Go to page four. Create a horizontal ruler guide at 5.875 inches.

14. Click the left text frame to select it; drag the bottom-middle handle of the text frame's box up until t snaps to the guide. Do the same to the right text frame. Your page should look similar to Figure 75 on page 4-42 of our InDesign textbook.

15. Go to the 2-3 page spread.  Select the text box in the right column of page two. Be careful not to select the text inside the column, select the entire textbox! Then hit the delete key on your keyboard. The text is automatically flowed to the next linked column.

16. Insert the 2Windmills.jpg picture into the top of the right column on page two. Resize it proportionally to fit into the column similar to Figure 77 on page 4-43 of your InDesign textbook.

17.  Create a horizontal ruler guide at 5.375 inches and create a textbox up to that line (still on page two).

18. Click on the left column on page two, and unlink the columns (by clicking the broken paper clip); then link the column to the new smaller column on the right.

19. Unfortunately, in Publisher, this removes all of your previously placed text! Don't worry, it is easy to fix in one step. As soon as you link your small column of text back into the first column on page three, the rest of the text will autoflow. :-)

20. Right-click on the right textbox on page four and select FORMAT TEXTBOX. Select the TEXT BOX tab in the dialog box and check the box INCLUDE CONTINUED ON PAGE...

21. Go to page five. Create a new master page (Master Page B) that has 0.5 inch margins and three columns. Apply this master page to page five only.

22. Delete the textboxes that are currently on page five.

23.  Insert the text from Sidebarcopy.doc and balance the three columns across the top edge of the ruler guide set at 4.75 inches.

24. Save your file.

25. Transfer the file into a PDF and submit both the PUB and the PDF file to the WebTycho assignment Autoflow.
