"Once
you have gotten out of rentals, you'll never go back"
[4] .
The difference between rental and standard shoes is comfort and fit,
and the way the soles are maintained. Like any other sport, a bowler
must have the proper footwear to be competitive.
When a bowler slides on
the lane, it is very important that shoes
fit properly and feel comfortable. Bowling shoes are designed to
allow sliding on the lane [5] .
Bowling shoes are made with different
soles which affects how much a bowler slides and how the bowler's
heel grips the lane.
Rental shoes are known to have flimsy leather that does not offer comfort or stability necessary for a good performance. When a shoe is too loose, it can cause imbalance in the slide and when a shoe is too tight it can cause chaffing and blistering. Furthermore, rental shoes do not have padded collars, cushioned insoles, and padded linings. These features in a bowling shoe allows the bowler to feel comfortable and help cushion the foot from the stresses exerted by the slide as well as help keep the foot secured by minimized movement in the shoe [4] .
The soles on bowling
shoes must be protected from water, oil,
and dirt that can impaired the execution of a smooth slide
[4] .
Therefore, shoe protectors are essential and can slip over the shoes
for protection.
High-performance bowling shoes are designed differently for right and left handed bowlers [4] . The sole of one shoe has a leather surface that is used for the sliding foot on a smooth stop at the delivery. The other shoe is made of rubber that is worn on the swing-slide foot. It provides traction for forward momentum and helps the bowler balance on a slippery approach. Bowling shoes can improve performance such as accuracy, ball speed, and power that is dependent on a good approach.
