FAQs
Q.
How do I see the code for an effect
I saw on a web page?
A.
Use "view source" from your browser.
Here's how:
MSIE:

Point your mouse anywhere on the page EXCEPT over a graphic and click the
right button. From the popup menu, click VIEW SOURCE. The page source will
come up in Notepad if you're on a Windows based system.
Netscape:

Click the VIEW menu then pick Page Source or do a CTRL-U
(this means hold down your CTRL button and the U at the same time then
release).
Q.
It takes forever to load web pages. Is there a way I can fix that?
A.
Yes!! Whenever you are having trouble loading or viewing pages
in WebTycho, a good and quick self-help trick is to Clear the Cache of your
web browser.
You will find info here:

E-Mail
FAQs
Q.
How can I read my e-mail on Polaris?
A.
There's no obvious way to send
or read mail when you log into Polaris. You have to run one of the two installed
mail programs: Pine or Elm.
You can find out how to do that at:
http://www.umuc.edu/suppserv/it/hosts/unix_guide/#email
It can be a fun experiment to try using one of these programs. The problem
with them is that they don't offer any of the convenience we're used to in
the mail programs we're using. Luckily there's a way to have mail that arrives
at your Polaris email address automatically forwarded to your main email
address. This even works with AOL addresses.
Setting this up requires that you run another little program on the Polaris
server called "Pico".
Use the following procedure to forward mail to another e-mail address:
1. While you're in the home directory of your UMUC account (this is where
you'll be when you first log onto the system), type:
pico .forward
2. Type the e-mail address of the account you want to receive your forwarded
mail.
3. Press [CTRL]x and answer "y" to save your changes.
Incoming mail will automatically be forwarded to the account you specified
in your ".forward" file.
Q.
How can I change my e-mail address?
A.
To get information about updating
your email address in Web Tycho, please visit the Email Page. You can access
it by clicking on the "Help" button in the upper right corner of your screen
and then clicking on "Help and Support Site." Select "Setting Up", and scroll
down in the CHECKLIST to #5. You should find that information there.
FTP FAQs
Q.
I use AOL. Can I use the AOL FTP feature to upload my pages to
Polaris?
A. Yes, you sure can! For complete instructions, with
screenshots of the process, please check this help page:
AOL FTP and Polaris
Q.
I made changes to my web page. The old version is still showing.
The new information is not showing. What is happening?
A. If changes to your web page don't seem to be showing up..
open your page again in your browser and hit the RELOAD/REFRESH button. This
downloads the page from the web, whereas before, you were calling up an old
version from your web cache. You should then be able to see the changes you
made.
If you still don't see your page revision,
PURGE your browser cache. This is best accomplished OFFLINE, so sign
off first :)
Purging Cache
Re-booting your computer, after purging, can also help.

Filename
FAQs
Q.
What is the best way to name web page files or files to be used on my page?
A. The best way to name files, whether these be page files or
graphics, etc, is to keep them as short as possible and all in lower case
letters. The use of unusual characters in filenames, like
_ - ~#*( )+ , is not recommended. If you see unusual
characters in any filename that you wish to use, it really is best to rename
it before putting in on your page.
Samples of recommended format:
index.html or index.htm
pic.gif or pic.jpg
page2.html or page2.html
When you name your web page file, remember
that you can write whatever you want to describe your page within the
<title></title> tag. Don't try to do that in the actual
filename. Keep them short :)
You must ALWAYS include the .htm or .html
file extension for web page names so that the browsers recognize it as a
web page file/html file.
EXAMPLE:
If my page is called index, the proper way to name it is index.html
or index.htm.
Please avoid adding any additional parts to filenames.
Avoid something like: index.page1.html
The same goes for sounds and graphics....please include the file extension
when naming...
sound.wav OR sound.mid
picturename.jpg OR picturename.gif
Q. How do I rename
a file?
A. You can do this in Windows Explorer.
-Use your START button, then select PROGRAMS, then WINDOWS EXPLORER.
-Navigate to the directory where you have stored your file.
-RIGHT click on the file icon for the file you want to
rename.
When the menu appears, click on RENAME. You should now see a box around
the filename.
-Backspace the old name out, and type in your new filename.
-Hit the ENTER key and you will have your file renamed.
Graphics
FAQs
Q.
The graphic I put on my page is not showing. All I see is a red X where it
is supposed to be. What am I doing wrong?

A. Please check the following:
-check that you have uploaded the graphic to your web space on
Polaris
-check that the filename you used in your HTML on your page is the VERY same
as the filename in your web space. These need to be identical, including
upper and lower case letters. Case counts!! DOG.gif is NOT the
same as dog.gif or DOG.GIF
-Check that the path to your graphic in your HTML tag is correct
If your graphic is in a "folder" in your web space called "images", then
that has to be in your HTML.
EXAMPLE: <IMG SRC="images/dog.gif">
Q.
How do I add animation to my page?

A. Adding an animated gif to your page is the same as adding
any other graphic. Use the same HTML tag.
EXAMPLE: <IMG SRC="images/dogjump.gif">
Q. I have added
all of my graphics to my page. Now, the page takes forever to load.
What can I do?
A. Please check how large your graphic files are. This
is not always related to the physical dimensions of your image, but to the
BYTE size. It it always best to keep file sizes around 40KB's (40,000
bytes). Large sized files will take quite a while to download
and view when a surfer visits your site. If you scan the images yourself,
set your scanner to no more than 72 dpi. Anything over that makes your
image very "heavy", and does not improve viewing on the web anyway.
What you can do is optimize your images.
Q.
How do I optimize images for the web?
A. There is optimizing software available to that, but you can
also do it on the web at various sites.
One for GIFs is: GIFWORKS.
You can optimize images here as well as do other modifications.
You can also check out
Paint Shop Pro.
UNIX FAQs
Q.
I am trying to set up my account and I am having trouble adding my new
password. What can I do?
A. Try this:
1. Telnet back into polaris.umuc.edu
2. At the prompt, enter your user ID and temporary password when prompted
to connect to Polaris.
3. At the "Enter Login Password:" prompt, enter the temporary password
AGAIN.
This means you'll enter the same temporary password a second time. Most folks
think this is the prompt asking for the new password. When the new password
fails to match your temporary one, you get an invalid password prompt and
the host connection is dropped. If you try this 3 or 4 times you end
up with a rude message about hacking and security.
4. Only when you see the prompt New Password:
should you type in the new password you wish you use.
You'll be asked
Re-enter new password:
Type it again.
Once done, you're all set. : )
Q.
How do I set permissions for my "new" web page?
A. If you have already set permissions for your WWW folder in
your web space, you only need to CHMOD this one new page.
Try this:
Sign on to your home directory then,
at the polaris> prompt, type:
Polaris> cd
www/
Polaris> chmod 755
your_filename.html
