The Degrees at a Distance Program (DDP) is an independent study degree program sponsored by the NFA which has agreements with seven accredited colleges and universities throughout the country to offer bachelor's degrees with concentrations in fire science, fire administration/management or fire prevention technology.

DDP provides an alternative means for fire service personnel to earn a bachelor's degree or pursue college-level learning in a fire-related course concentration without the requirement of having to attend on campus classes. While independent study and distance learning have appealed to working adults nationally in growing numbers in the past few years, DDP is particularly attractive to fire service personnel whose fire department workshifts normally make classroom attendance difficult.

DDP institutions emphasize faculty-student interaction through written, online, and telephone contact. Students receive detailed guidance and feedback on the required assignments and take proctored final exams at hometown locations.

To develop a common body of knowledge in fire, life safety, and emergency services, the goals of the Degrees at a Distance Program curriculum are to:

  • Prepare graduates for professional and allied service positions in all levels of government, business, and industry;

  • Provide an interdisciplinary curriculum with studies in fire science, administration, and prevention technology leading toward a baccalaureate degree;

  • Enable graduates to acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to apply the theories and practices of fire administration and prevention technology effectively; and

  • Enable graduates to provide leadership in the preservation of life and property and the reduction of human suffering resulting from all types of emergencies and disasters.
