Overview

 

Goals

·         To have hands-on experience with the technologies that will lead to the “Next Generation Internet”: 
Web 3.0 (including Virtual Worlds and Avatars) and Cloud Computing

·         To increase students’ engagement and satisfaction from group projects

·         To enhance students’ team-building, presentation, and communications skills development

·         To conduct effective collaborative research on utilized technologies and on dynamic virtual demonstrations/simulations related to ITEC 620 course objectives.

1

Preparation:

·         Check if your computer meets the system requirements

·         Read the Second Life security guidelines and recall the UMUC code of student conduct

·         Create a Second Life account and an Avatar (use your real first name) – see detailed instructions from the Second Life link above

·         Provide your Zip Code – follow the link from the Group Project conference in WebTycho

·         Once the groups are created, introduce yourself in the WebTycho study group.

Kick Off MeetingThursday, 7 to 8pm ET attendance is required:

·         Before session start:

ü  Make sure you have installed QuickTime – needed to play videos in Second Life

ü  Have a microphone for use in Second Life – makes a huge difference over using only chat

ü  Open the ITEC GoogleDocs PPT

ü  Arrive 15 minutes earlier at the UMUC classroom to get accommodated.

  • Agenda:

ü  PPT overview on explored technologies and the ITEC620 group project

ü  Virtual tour in Second Life – while on the tour, take snapshots; after the tour post in the ITEC GoogleDocs PPT.

I.   Project Preparation

·         Create a group GoogleDocs start-up presentation:

ü  The group to decide on the presentation title and structure – include at least:

-    brief overview on utilized technologies (virtual worlds and cloud computing)

-    report on team-building activities (see next section for details)

-    description of explored virtual demonstrations/simulations and how they enrich ITEC620 learning experiences

-    conclusions and references

ü  Create one GoogleDocs start-up presentation with title and sections slides.

·         Schedule a one hour presentation meeting in Second Life for Week 11 – attendance is required.

II.  Team-Building Activities                                                                       

·         The group to schedule in Week 3 a one hour meeting in Second Life

·         The group to select one member to record the session using the BB FlashBack Express . Here you can learn how to record .

·         The whole group to gather at the UMUC location in Second Life next to the two ITEC620 boxes – the boxes will appear right for your scheduled meeting and not earlier

·         Each member to introduce his/herself to the group

·         The group to select one member as a timekeeper to take screenshots with the start and end times of the two team-building activities

·         The group to work on the simulation game described in NoteCard #1:

ü  Click on the box with ITEC620 in blue to get the instructions

ü  Take frequent snap-shots and record the most interesting activities with BB FlashBack Express.

·         The group to work on the scavenger hunt described in NoteCard #2:

ü  Click on the box with ITEC620 in red  to get the instructions

ü  Take frequent snap-shots and record the activities with BB FlashBack Express

·         After the session place your snap-shots and comments in the Google Docs presentation.

Project Work:

·         Weeks 4-9: Schedule weekly meetings in Second Life to discuss project status and work:

ü  The group to conduct a brief research on virtual word and cloud computing technologies

ü  Each team member to locate one virtual demonstration or simulation in Second Life that supports ITEC620 objectives and to provide instructions on finding and using this simulation

ü  The group to create a virtual tour based on located demonstrations and simulations

ü  The group to fill in the final presentation with the research and virtual tour results.

·         Week 4: One team member to submit the Project Outline and Schedule through the Assignments folder in WebTycho – including links to the Group GoogleDocs presentation

·         Week 7: One team member to submit the Project Status Report

·         Week 10: One team member to post the link to the presentation in the designated Group Project conference in WebTycho.

Project Discussions and Virtual Presentation:

·         Facilitate the conference discussions in WebTycho

·         Coordinate with the instructor to schedule a presentation meeting in Second Life

·         Provide a short PPT version of the group presentation to be uploaded in Second Life

·         Conduct a final presentation in Second Life – present the group research and take the attendees on your group virtual tour –  all group members are required to attend.

·         Fill out the Group Project Survey.
