1. Intra-Communications
We will be communicating with each other using e-mail,
WebTycho conferences, and Web pages. For this class you are required to
originate all e-mail from our Nova server. No other source will be accepted.
Please also note that attachments will not be accepted.

For this class you will need a numbered account on Nova our UNIX server. Your first task will be to set up this account.
Once you have setup your numbered account send a message to your instructors class e-mail account on Nova from yours on Nova to confirm that communications has been established. To be sure that all communication systems are working well post a short "hello" note to the WebTycho cafe conference. You also need to become familiar with the text. Spend 4-5 hours and do a quick read of the entire volume.

Metric: You have until the first Sunday, after the start of classes, to complete this tasks. Failure to meet the date will cost you grade points and cause you to miss important message traffic.
Purpose: To gain familiarity with the UNIX environment.

2. The Internet From Your Perspective
Presumably you are taking this class because you want to learn about the Internet. Given that, please write a short essay (at least 300 words) addressing the following questions.
a. What sort of uses do you have for computing? b. What has been your exposure to the Internet? c. What is the 'muddiest' issue you have encountered when trying to understand and use the Internet? d. What type of Web access do you have? e. Who is your ISP? f. What is your IP address? g. What are the Internet issues that you particularly would like addressed?Please post your essay to the WebTycho "Perspective" conference as a Main Topic .

Metric: You need to need to display awareness of Internet and computing issues.
Purpose:

(2) To facilitate gaining familiarity with the Web Tycho conferencing process.

Metric: This essay will be used to form the content of the Web site that you need to submit for this class. This use needs to be considered when organizing this essay.
Purpose: The Internet facilitates the interchange of information among large numbers of people. This assignment's purpose it to explore this exploit.

4. Student Recommended XHTML Resources
Research and post, to the "XHTML Resource" conference, a 50 word minimum recommendation for an XHTML information resource on the Web. Be sure to include an active link to the resource as well as a justification f0r your choice.Value: {4} points.
Metric: One point for each validated justification up tp 4 points.
Purpose: To initiate thinking about XHTML

6. Minimal Web Page
Design and post a minimal Web page to our Nova server. This page shall include:

7. Enhansed Web Page
Starting with the minimal page, use embeded Cascading Style Sheet
(CSS) code to design and post an enhansed Web page to our Nova server.
This page shall, in addition to the content noted in item 4:
1. have a pastel background color. 2. use a body san-serif 10 point font and a san-serif 12 point headline font. 3. have a left margin of 2% and a right margin of 40%. 4. use Lorem Ipsum text for layout presentation. 5. be named using an obfuscated URL to hold down cross polination.Send an e-mail to your instructor's Nova account, including your secret URL, when your page is up. Remember only e-mail originating from Nova will be accepted.

Metric: It's exactly correct or not worth 2 points for each correct item. No credit will be awarded if you do not use embedded CSS code.
Purpose: To develop layout skills.

8. Comprehensive Web Site
Using the the Web page designs developed so far, design and post a site
to our class server. This site shall:
1. contain 6 pages minium. All pages must include appropriate titles using the HTML <title></title> tags. Four pages must be content pages. 2. include an entry page with the file name index.html. 3. include an about page. All material used, not created by you, must be cited on this page using APA citing procedures. You MUST have explicit permission to use material that is not originally created by you. All original material shall be covered via the appropriate copyright notice. The about page shall also include your name and class e-mail address. 4. contain links on all pages to all other site pages. 5. contain links to at least 4 external Web page resources. 6. have a common logo on all pages. 7. have the same background color and or the same background image on all pages. 8. include at least one horizontal rule on a page. 9. have all pages with a left margin of 2% and a right margin of 40%. 10. use stylesheet code for all pages.Value {23} points.
Metric: A maximun of 2 points will be awarded for each of the items listed above with an additional point for a well executed about page. Up to 3 additional points will be awarded for well written content pages. If your pages are not multi-browser (IE, FireFox, and Opera) friendly or if you use deprecated tags you will loose a point for each transgression. (-6 points maximum) Code generated using WYSIWYG authoring tools will not be accepted.Purpose: To teach HTML coding.

9. Security Essay
Post an essay, 300 words minimum, as a Main Topic, to the
WebTycho "Security" conference that discusses security in the
information age. Cite at least one Web sites that supports or amplifies
your comments.
Purpose: To raise awareness to security issues.
Value {4} points.
Metric: An essay of substance and at least one APA format valid citation is required to earn all 4 points.
