This
procedure is used to create a named student "shell" account (i.e., one you get to keep
while you are a student) on UMUC's Unix system, Polaris. The account will remain active
as long as you take classes in consecutive spring and fall semesters.
Note,
you need to know your SS# (Student ID) and UMUC PIN to create this account. If you do not
know your PIN call 301-985-7268 for assistance.
- Access Polaris, either via direct dial or your ISP account using a telnet client on your machine.
- At Login: enter "newuser".
- At Please enter your SSN: enter your SSN.
- At Please enter your PIN: enter your PIN (What else?).
- You get only 3 tries at this so ye old badders can't hang a computer on the system and
hack into it. So call 301-985-7400 for help if you bomb.
- You will then be asked to accept the schools security policy, enter "accept" or it ain't
going to let you in.
- Next, if all goes well, your user ID and temporary password
will be displayed. If your memory is anything like mine write 'em down.
- Now, when you first sign on, you will be required to immediately change your password.
Passwords need to be between 6 and 8 characters one of which is non-alpha. I suggest you connect
two short "words" with the non-alpha making the password easier to remember e.g., mug-wump,
blu+sky. Passwords are case sensitive so take care.
- The dialogue between Polaris and you goes something like this:
Login:flazarus
Password: 43t7h9lo
Enter Login Password: 43t7h9lo
New Password: mug-wump
Re-enter new password: mug-wump
