In
the event that you forget your password, you may use this
procedure to create a new Unix password.
Note,
you need to know your SS# (student ID) and UMUC PIN to use this procedure.
If you do not know your PIN call 301-985-7268 for assistance.
- Access Polaris, either via direct dial or your ISP account using
a telnet client on your machine.
- At Login: enter "chgpass"
- Polaris will respond with
Last login: Wed Jan 23 21:53:30 from 131.171.20.130
- At Please enter your SSN: enter your SS# (no dashes).
- At Please enter your PIN: enter your PIN (What else?).
- You get only 3 tries at this so ye old badders can't hang a computer on the system
and hack into it. So call 301-985-7400 for help if you bomb.
- Next, if all goes well, your user ID and temporary password
will be displayed. If your memory is anything like mine write 'em down.
- Now you will be required to immediately change your password. Passwords need to be between 6 and 8 characters one of which is non-alpha. I suggest you connect two short "words" with the non-alpha making the password easier to remember e.g., mug-wump, blu+sky. Passwords are case sensitive so take care.
- The dialogue between Polaris and you goes something like this:
Login:flazarus
Password: 43t7h9lo
Password has expired
Please enter CURRENT password
Password: 43t7h9lo
Please enter new password
New Password: mug-wump
Verify Password: mug-wump
