Creating a Numbered Account on Nova using "newclass"

The newclass system allows students who require numbered class computer accounts to create them online. Students must know their MyUMUC username and password BEFORE they attempt to create accounts. To get this information, if you don't have it, go to https://my.umuc.edu. and click the "Retrieve My Login Information." Numbered class accounts are not available until just before class starts.

*******************************************
NOTE: The newclass system is not available
between the hours of 9:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.
*******************************************

  1. PLEASE CAREFULLY READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS DISPLAYED ON THE SCREEN DURING THE ACCOUNT CREATION PROCESS!

  2. Open a telnet session to nova.umuc.edu. Easy enough if you are using Windows which has a built-in telnet application. Connect with your ISP, click Start/Run on the task bar then enter "telnet nova.umuc.edu" without quotes of course. Click Ok.

  3. At the "login:" prompt, type "newclass" (without the quotes).

  4. At the "Please enter your MyUMUC portal username" prompt, type your portal usernane.

  5. At the "Please enter your MyUMUC portal password" prompt, type your MyUMUC password (case sensitive). Your password will NOT be displayed as you type.

  6. After a brief pause while your registration information is checked, the classes for which you are currently registered will be listed, and one of the following three messages will be displayed for each class:

  7. After you have read the information displayed on the screen, press the [ENTER] key to generate your account(s). Accounts will be created for all classes that require them. This process may take several minutes to complete, especially if there are other users accessing newclass at the same time.

  8. MAKE A NOTE OF YOUR ACCOUNT NAME AND TEMPORARY PASSWORD INFORMATION and then press the [ENTER] key to clear the screen. If more than one account is created, the system will display a screen of information for each account.

It might be a good idea to copy and paste the password into a text editor (e.g., notepad). That way there will be no mistaking a lowercase l for a one etc.

  9. After the information for your last account has been displayed, press the [ENTER] key to exit the newclass system.

  10. To access your class account from this point forward, you will need to Telnet to nova.umuc.edu as you did in step two. The first time you sign onto your account, you will be required to change your temporary password that was given to you in step eight. The password you choose must be between six and eight characters in length and not start with a dictionary word. Also it must contain at least one non-alphabetic character.

At the "Enter OLD Password:" prompt, enter the temporary password you were initially assigned in step eight.

At the "Enter NEW Password:" prompt, type in a password of your choice. Passwords must be between 6 and 8 characters in length, and not start with a dictionary word. Also it must contain at least one non-alphabetic character.

At the "Re-enter new password:" prompt, type the new password again for verification. You will then use this new password each time you login.

NOTE: During your initial login, you will be asked to accept our security policy. To agree to the terms of the policy, type "accept"

NOTE: If you add a class that requires a computer account after you've run newclass, simply repeat the above procedure, and the system will create an account for your new class.
