Ferd's Net Journalhttp://polaris.umuc.edu/~flazarus/This page is not intended for public access but rather it is designed as a memory jogger for me. It is better organized and informative than a simple bookmark. I suggest that all of my students implement this sort of Net Journal. Do note that What follows is not original work but rather material 'grabbed' from the Net and posted here for easy reference. Yes I do know that it has not aged well. Its on the list for repair.

Lipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only four centuries, but now the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularized in the 1960's with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lipsum. Nursery Rhymes and Silly Stuff Classic Book Shelf While there are any number of sites featuring public domain e-texts, this site stands out not so much for its content, but for its innovative Java reading applet. Visitors reading e-texts at this site do not have to settle for a sometimes difficult-to-read default display. Using the applet at the bottom of the viewing window, users can control the text size, font, and background color, picking a combination that makes reading easiest. The works featured at the site are listed by author name (best accessed via the site map link at the top right corner of the page), and include a number of classic works of (primarily) British and American literature, with an especially large collection of works by Charles Dickens. Entries for each author include several related sites (including webrings). From the site map page users can also perform keyword searches of the site's title and author listings, and access bookmarks, a helpful feature that allows readers to save their place in books between visits and return to where they left off. Alex e-text The Alex Catalogue of Electronic Texts is collection of digital documents. The scope of documents in the collection include items from American literature, English literature, and Western philosophy. A unique feature of the Catalogue is the on-the-fly creation of PDF (Portable Document Format) files. Using this option you can specify things like fonts and font sizes for your output. For example, you can create a PDF version of Washington Irving's Rip Van Winkle. This feature allows you to create simply formatted but very readable documents for printing; the documents in the collection are not necessarily intended to be read online. e-netLibrary Associated with UMUC. Rather, this tutorial should arm you with a basic understanding of Perl so that you can work through the examples you care about -- web interaction -- without first needing to become a Perl guru." Active Perl Perl, the Practical Extraction and Reporting Language, has long been a critical tool for building dynamic Websites and automating various Internet-related tasks. Unfortunately its use has largely been limited to those working on Unix-based systems (where Perl originated) or serious hackers willing to go through the contortions necessary to run Unix-based software under MS Windows. With the release of ActivePerl, this is no longer true. ActivePerl is a free version of Perl created to install and run easily under Microsoft Windows 95, 98, and NT, and interface well with most Windows NT Web servers. ActivePerl can be used to write CGI scripts for interactive Websites or system administration scripts that automate routine tasks. The Perl language is particularly well suited for scripts that analyze server or system logs and generate email or HTML reports to present the information in human-readable form. Many add-on Perl modules are available at the CPAN archive for interfacing with a very wide variety of software packages, languages, and protocols, including DCOM, XML, X11, TCL/Tk, and SQL, and performing a wide array of common software tasks. ActiveState also maintains an archive of Perl modules packaged specifically for use with ActivePerl. FrameIt A script to allow easy return to a site after linking off. Anonymous Surfing The goal that Silenter had in mind when creating this service was to protect the user and keep them safe from websites which steal personal information from you which cause several security risks if cross-referenced with your ISP. Silenter does this by being a mid-point between you and the server you wish to contact. This results in total anonymity, and makes you safe online. When you want to visit a website, for instance yahoo.com. Meet AddAll and MX BookFinder, two book meta search engines, each with its own strong points. AddAll compares prices at 37 online bookstores and reports its findings with the cost of shipping included. MX BookFinder searches only six sites, handpicked for server speed and specialties like out-of-print and rare books. Acses is another book finder. From a TourBus review of this site: "Key in a title, author, ISBN, or keyword, and Acses will compare prices from 40 different online bookstores. Best of all, unlike AddAll.com, the results from a search at Acses actually contain a BUNCH of information. For example, a search for Tom Clancy's book "Rainbow Six" yields 10 hits, and each hit tells you: 1. The book's title; 2. The book's author; 3. The book's publishing date; 4. The book's publisher; 5. The book's binding; 6. The book's ISBN; 7. The book's list price." Google Searches based on citation ranking. METAEUREKA METAEUREKA distinguishes itself by its no-nonsense format -- no graphics, ads, or anything really except the search box and your results. It also includes a very useful feature for users concerned with the "freshness" of their search returns. Clicking on the Site Info link under each result produces a small pop-up window which lists, among other things, the last time the site was modified. METAEUREKA is keyword-searchable; indexes AltaVista, Google, Lycos, Alltheweb, and Yahoo, offering ten or twenty results per engine; and lists the results on a single page. CNET Help.com The site, a searchable interface for posting and reading Usenet technical newsgroups, comes courtesy CNet. The designers have completely hidden the site's Usenet functionality. Help.com looks like a typical portal, with top categories such as Hardware, Internet, and Software with sub-categories (such as ICQ, Browsers, palmtops, etc.) presented as Web message boards. When you post a technical question here, the site sends the message to all relevant Usenet newsgroups. The back-end software keeps track of responses and presents them in the appropriate sections. Original posters must register, and the software keeps track of responses to their posts. All messages that originate at Help.com contain the e-mail address of the registered user. Their editors then highlight the best reviewers and what consensus exists on which products are best bets. The Editors' Report is an analysis of all the reviews and their conclusions. The Researching Librarian Created by Kerry Smith, Assistant Professor and Library Instruction Services Coordinator, Mississippi State University Libraries, this new metasite gathers a modest but carefully selected group of sites that may be useful to librarians conducting research. The sites are organized in five categories: databases, funding, journals, statistics, and tools. Each link is briefly annotated or includes a block quote from the title page of the site being linked to. While many of the sites listed will be familiar to experienced online researchers, the site is worth a look. Consumer Search ConsumerSearch.com seeks out every review of a consumer product that it can track down. Then, its writers analyze and rank the hundreds of reviews to offer lucid and useful reports for each category. Experts write the category reports; yes, the site presents their credentials. When the experts disagree, they clearly cover all points of view. The recommendations appear reasonable, and the site can be used as a search engine to locate the original reviews of virtually any product. Find Articles The site offers free access to the full-text of articles published in over 350 magazines and journals dating from 1998. Users can search the database by keyword and by one of the nine subject categories (Arts & Entertainment, Computers & Technology, Reference & Education, Sports, etc.). Search returns include article title, periodical, and short description, with a link to the full-text. Quotation Archives Cross Referencing Encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri & books of quotations from the world's leading publishers. All cross-referenced, all reliable, all in one place. Each category breaks down into numerous topical headings, and listings for the individual sites include a description and rankings for relevance, popularity, and links. CompletePlanet's database is also keyword searchable. The site notes both new additions and the most popular sites and offers a detailed search tutorial. Users who would like to learn more about the "deep" Web are invited to read CompletePlanet's 41-page white paper, "The Deep Web: Surfacing Hidden Value," offered in HTML, .pdf, and .zip formats. Also see:TinyURL For my UMUC site TinyURL came up with Publius Publius: Censorship Resistant Publishing System John Gilmore's immortal quote has it that "The Net treats censorship as damage and routes around it." A number of recent software projects seek to do the same, and Publius may well be the most robust and well thought out of the lot. Publius takes its name from the pseudonym of the authors of "The Federalist Papers" (Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison), who found it useful to anonymously express their support of the US Constitution. Like several other systems, Publius relies on distributing documents across numerous servers in such a way that even the server owners don't know what documents they host. There's a lot of high-level crypto math here, but in essence a Perl program of a mere 1,500 lines does all the hard work. Users can read and publish documents anonymously from their own browser. A fairly technical and thorough paper (in PDF) explains the theory behind the project and surveys the competing anonymous publishing systems. Chile-Head Quoting from the site introduction ... 'Being a Chile-Head is a serious business. It means expressing a devotion to all things Chile pepper related; not just 'how hot?', but the length of the 'burn', the after-taste, the growing, harvesting and cooking of chiles. But why is there such a deep love of chiles? The reason is that during the eating of chiles, a chemical in the chile pepper irritates the trigeminal cells. These are pain receptor cells located throughout the mouth, the nose and the throat. When your body's nerves feel the pain induced by the chemical on these cells, they immediately start to transmit pain messages to your brain. Your brain receives these signals and responds by automatically releasing endorphins (the body's natural painkillers). These endorphins kick in and act as a pain killer and at the same time, create a temporary feeling of euphoria, giving the chile-eater, a natural high. The body's other responses include increasing the heart rate to increase the metabolism, increasing salivation in order to try and refresh the mouth and by increasing the rate of sweating by the body. Your nose also starts to run and the gastrointestinal tract slips into high speed. Hot & spicy food lovers soon begin to crave these feelings and are soon hooked. The problem however is that some chile peppers are a lot hotter than others. Take a bite out of the wrong one and you could be in for a shock.'
