TRIS - The Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS) Database is the world's largest and most comprehensive bibliographic resource on transportation information. TRIS is produced and maintained by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) at the National Academies of Sciences. TRIS contains almost a half million records of published and ongoing research on all modes and disciplines in the field of transportation. Each year over 20,000 new records are added to TRIS.
INFORMS Rail Special Interest Group - The Rail Applications Special Interest Group (RASIG) provides a forum to bring together practitioners, consultants, and academics interested in applying operations research and management science (OR and MS) techniques to the railroad industry. Activities include roundtables, paper sessions at national meetings of INFORMS, workshops, and focus groups. Roundtables provide attendees with a unique opportunity to explore in depth topics ranging from eBusiness to simulation to network modeling along with a panel of experts. Paper sessions feature the latest in OR and MS research pertaining to the rail industry.
Ultra Dynamics, Inc - Ultra, formerly Dowty, pioneered the concept of hydraulic retarders for continuous speed control in classification yards. Today, more than 300,000 retarders have been installed worldwide. With railroad traffic increasingly consisting of intermodal or unit trains, the need for excessively large, over-equipped and generously manned classification yards is decreasing. Still there is traffic that needs to be switched. In order that the industry can compete with highway truck transportation, it is important that freight cars are routed through efficient, cost effective classification yards.
HUMP CLASSIFICATION YARDS OF THE WORLD - International multilingual Yahoo group (English, German, French, Italian) about hump yards worldwide with message board (containing complete hump yard listings of various countries) and links to over 450 websites about hump yards on all continents (listed alphabetically by countries, also with hump yards about which information is hard to get.)
ENO - Recently-published articles in the Journal of the Transportation Research Forum can be ordered from Eno Transportation Foundation, Inc, Transportation Quarterly, 1634 I Street NW, Suite 500, Washington D.C. 20006-4003, for about $6 each plus S/H to U.S. destinations. I am still trying to find out what the procedure should be use if someone needs copies of older articles.
National Technical Information Service - A branch of the U.S. Department of Commerce, many government-sponsored research reports can be ordered from them.
Pete Swan's Site - I am collaborating with Dr Peter Swan at Penn State University on additional research. You will find information on logistics costs and links to additional articles on rail service improvement at this site.
UMI Dissertation Express - Most Ph.D. dissertations listed here (including my own) can be ordered from University Microfilms for about $30 each. UMI lists abstracts in searchable format for a period of two years. MIT dissertations are not available from UMI - they have to be ordered from MIT directly.

European Federation for Transport & Environment - Transport affects everyone; it must function efficiently while causing minimum damage to the environment and human health. However, this damage seems to be increasing rather than diminishing. For this reason T&E speaks out for sustainable transport in Europe.
