Library Exercises

If you'd like to try out some database searches, here are some exercises to get you started.  No need to respond, but if you do, I will read your response and comment on it.

I.  JSTOR, which has articles dating back to the nineteenth century, is a good database to begin your search on Puddn'head Wilson.

• To see the wealth of resources on Puddn'head Wilson,  go to the Library Databases and E-Journals page. Under Resources by Title, click on J  and then on JSTOR.
• Enter your last name and either your social security number or your 14-digit barcode number and click on login if you are prompted to do so.
• On the first screen, click on Search.
• Enter Pudd'nhead Wilson in the search box. Then scroll down and click on Search.  Notice how many results you get. 
• To limit your results click on Modify Search next to the search box. Try adding different terms and see if they limit your results. Try some e of the following searches: Puddn'head Wilson and race, Puddn'head Wilson and identity, Pudd'nhead Wilson and society. Do you get fewer results? Click on some of the articles that interest you and browse through them.

II. Project Muse is another good database for research on Puddn'head Wilson. Go to the Library Databases and E-Journals page. Under Resources by Title, click on P  and then on Project Muse. Try the same searches as you did in JSTOR. How many useful articles did you find?

III. Finally, Go to the Library Databases and E-Journals page. Under Resources by Title, click on P  and then on PCI FullText. In this database before searching, under Search for click in the circle next to Article citations with full text in order to find full text articles. Do the same searches as you did in JSTOR and Project Muse.
