Research Exercise

This exercise will help you find, summarize, and cite a scholarly article from a library database, to use in your Literature Review.

Exercise

1. Choose a library subject guide that is appropriate to your topic. It will most likely be

but, depending on the topic you have chosen, you may find other guides useful as well, such as:

2. In the subject guide(s) you have chosen, select one or more library databases in which to search for a full-text scholarly article on your topic. Full-text means that the entire article is available for you to read online.

3. When you have found an article that you can use in your research, please post a reply in this conference. Your reply should include:

Below you will find a sample answer to this exercise. You may post your answer either as an attached Word document, or directly in your WebTycho posting.

This exercise is for exploring and learning: your answers do not have to be perfect, and please ask me any questions you may have.

Thank you very much for your work!

What aspect of stress are you researching?
I want to research how physical exercise can help with stress management.

What database or databases did you search in?
PsycARTICLES and PsycINFO. I chose them because they focus entirely on psychology and because they have full-text articles. Ultimately, though, the article I found was full-text in another database, Education Research Complete.

What search or searches did you use?
I did a simple search: stress management AND exercise

Is the article you have found scholarly? How can you tell?
The article is scholarly. I can tell because the authors are associated with an academic institution (University of Ottawa). Also, the article has numerous cited references and is written in fairly formal language: the intended audience is scholars and students, not the general public.

Provide a brief summary (4 or 5 sentences) of the article you have found. The summary must be written in your own words and phrases. Within your summary, include an in-text APA citation for the article you have found.
MacFarlane and Montgomery (2010) describe the very stressful conditions under which student teachers work. Factors affecting the stress a student teacher experiences include gender, economic situation, workload, and the student teacher's perception of their own abilities. Among the coping strategies used by student teachers to manage stress, MacFarlane and Montgomery suggest that exercise might be especially effective. They cite several studies showing the positive effect of physical exercise on stress management. In particular, MacFarlane and Montgomery link exercise with improved perceptual abilities: student teachers who exercise may be better able to appraise factors in their lives that cause stress, and with improved appraisial comes improved coping.

Provide an APA References list citation for the article you've found.
