Finding Images

Art history research can be enhanced with images, and this section of the conference discusses how to use the Oxford Art Online database to find images.

Option 1: Finding articles and images

  1. Enter your search terms in either the box in the upper right-hand corner or in the box underneath Search by source and click on the SEARCH button:

  2. Your search results page will look like this:

Note that you can use the boxes under Display results from: to limit your search results to items from a particular resource or to items that are of a particular type (e.g., images).

Option 2: Finding images only
  1. Either click on the IMAGES link toward the top of the page or enter your search terms in the box under Search for images only and click on the SEARCH button:

  2. Your search results page will look like this:

What if I can't find an image in Oxford Art Online?

Unfortunately, Oxford Art Online does not contain images for all of its entries. If you aren't able to find an image in Oxford Art Online, you may be able to find one in another UMUC Library database, such as CAMIO (Catalog of Art Museum Images Online).

You can also find images with a simple Web search -- you can find images on the free Web by using Google Images or Bing Images, for example. You can also find images for your research by using some of the Web sites mentioned in the UMUC Library's Guide to Art History Resources.

Regardless of whether you find images in UMUC Library databases or on the free Web, though, remember that you must provide citations for the images when you use them in your research papers. Information about citing articles and images will be presented in the next sections of the conference.
