Library Services or Resources that Support Your Classes
Library Service or Resource What the Service or Resource Does How it Supports Your Classes
E-Reserves This service retrieves and posts articles or book chapters in your WebTycho or WebTycho-enhanced classroom. In addition, the library obtains copyright clearance for you.  Review Electronic Reserves on WebTycho for additional information on how to request materials, when to request materials, how long the process takes, etc.  You may wish to have your students all read the same required articles or book chapters for discussion or a writing assignment.
Information Literacy and Library Instruction

Information literacy, i.e. the ability to find, evaluate, and use information, is of paramount importance to the academic success of your students. Through the introduction and continued reinforcement of information literacy concepts and skills your students will receive a solid foundation in the scholarly resources and techniques needed to broaden their thinking to more than just choosing and using the first few entries retrieved from a too broad Google search.

ILS outlines UMUC's information literacy requirements and objectives and offers suggestions for incorporating information literacy into courses at UMUC Information Literacy FAQ and Tutorial for Developing and Evaluating Assignments.

ILS staff can provide assistance by working with you to incorporate information literacy opportunities into your syllabus. The online helps and how-tos give asynchronous, unmediated assistance in understanding the concepts and in using the wide variety of relevant tools and techniques needed for scholarly research.

A library presentation can be arranged for your UMUC face-to-face or WebTycho class to introduce students to library research methods, the USMAI library catalog, UMUC's subscription databases, and other resources. This will help your students become more confident in the research process, utilizing active learning as a method of reinforcement. Use the Faculty Request for Library Instruction form to schedule instruction.

Help with Citation We have a number of guides, tutorials, and tools for help with formatting citations.

Citation Resources is a one-stop resource for easy to use guides and tutorials on APA, MLA, and other popular citation formats.

RefWorks is an easy to use tool for managing a database of references and formatting them in APA, MLA, and many other citation styles.

You can point your students to these guides, tutorials, and tools for help with in-text citation as well as bibliographies and lists of works cited in the papers you assign.
Plagiarism Related Services ILS provides a subscription to Turnitn.com, a software to help you identify plagiarism in your students' assignments. See the Turnitin.com FAQ for more information. To see how it works, view and listen to these short presentations, Overview, Guidelines, and Signing Up and Checking Papers

In addition to library resources, the UMUC Effective Writing Center offers suggestions for Helping Students Avoid Plagiarism.

Also, you may also want to become familiar with the UMUC Center for Intellecutal Property's Virtual Academic Integrity Laboratory (VAIL), a portal for both faculty and students on plagiarism, including information on how to prevent and detect it.

You can use Turnitin.com to review student assignments for plagiarism, and you can allow your students to check their own papers to get a better sense of how to avoid inadvertent plagiarism.

You may want to refer your students to the Effective Writing Center's tutorial How to Avoid Plagiarism to stress the importance of doing original research and citing text properly.

You can use the VAIL Faculty and Administrator Resources for guides on preventing academic dishonesty and designing assignments, plagiarism alarms and signals, and detection tools and methods.

Copyright Resources ILS offers guidance on copyright issues for faculty and students, including fair use in the classroom, at Copyright and Fair Use in the Classroom, on the Internet, and on the World Wide Web.

Also, you may want to become familiar with UMUC's Center for Intellectual Property, which provides a wealth of information on current copyright issues, tutorials and learning objects, workshops and seminars for a national and international audience, and an intellectual property resource specialist.

You may be able to legally and ethically use new and innovative materials in your class to enhance your students' learning.
Virtual Library Classroom (VLIB101) This library service is a free, non-credit, "classroom" or work space on the WebTycho server where students, faculty and staff can practice their research skills with the help of librarians offering tips and guidance.

You can use VLIB101 as a work space for a librarian to provide instruction supporting a required research assignment. You can send your class to self-roster into VLIB101 and join an instructional session customized to meet their research needs. E-mail us at library@umuc.edu for further details.
UMUC Ingenta Program This program allows faculty and Doctor of Management candidates to order full text articles via fax for items listed in the Ingenta database of hard to find scholarly materials.

You can use Ingenta to further your own scholarly research or enhance your classes' reading lists in electronic reserves.
Faculty Development Classes and Workshops

The Center for Teaching and Learning offers a wide variety of professional development programs and training for UMUC faculty and academic administrators worldwide. Frequent offerings focus on library related issues.

A certificate program offered through the Center for Teaching and Learning includes a library-related workshop, Beyond Library Basics: Choosing, Using, but not Abusing Information Resources.

You can learn the latest developments in pedagogy and technology to enhance your classes and build supportive learning communities.
Reference Help You can chat in real-time with a librarian, phone in or e-mail a reference question, use Instant Messaging for a quick fact check, or set up an appointment for more in-depth assistance. Read the Ask a Librarian section of the library homepage for additional information. Throughout the semester or term, reference librarians can help your students navigate particular databases and the library catalog for the best possible research materials . You may want to make students aware of this service when you give them a research assignment.
Get It Delivered: Article and Book Delivery Services If a book or article you need is not available at ILS or in ILS's online databases, or if you are teaching distance education classes and do not live near UMUC, you may request materials for delivery. Check for your delivery options. Speedy electronic delivery of articles and book chapters may be available to you via DocumentExpress View and listen to an overview of the Get it Delivered service. If you want to have your students do in-depth research, they may need materials not readily available to them. Ask them early in the semester to request materials through this service to further their research. You may wish to stress that journal articles and book chapters delivered electronically will reach the distant student most quickly.
