Required Exercise 1: Evaluating Web Sites

Professor Whitford requires that you complete the following exercise, which will give you practice evaluating the quality of information resources.

I. Take a careful look at each of the following Web sites:

• Greenpeace International
• Dihydrogen Monoxide Research Division Website
• Environmental Protection Agency

II. Answer the following questions about each of the Web sites. The questions are based on our library guide Evaluating Web Resources.

1. Who are the authors of the Web sites and what are their credentials?
2. When were these Web sites last updated and by whom?
3. What types of research materials, articles, studies are available and do they seem professional or scholary, or of a more popular nature?
4. Is there a particular bias or political agenda visible?
5. Would you use this Web site for your research? Why or why not?
