Instruction for Downloading Putty
1. Visit the PuTTY download page
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
2. Download the putty.exe file (the first one in the list). Save it somewhere on your PC (e.g. to the desktop).
3. Double click on the putty.exe file.
4. In the "Host Name (or IP address)" box, type in the host to which you want to connect. E.g. nova.umuc.edu
5. Make sure the "Protocol" selection (under the host name box) is set to SSH
6. Click on "Open" at the bottom.
7. If you are connecting to a host for the first time, there will be a warning about the host's key. Click "Yes" to accept the key.
8. When prompted, enter your username and password.
Advanced options:
After step 5 above, you can save the connection information to a session profile, which makes subsequent connections faster. To do this, type a name (e.g. Nova) into the box just below "Saved Sessions", then click "Save". The session profile will be added to the list of sessions. Then, whenever you start PuTTY, you can simply double-click on the session name and immediately connect.
You can also use this feature to save preferences, such as fonts and color schemes. (I find the "Lucida Console" font at size 14 to be very readable.)
