Change Your Polaris Password

Requirements for Polaris Passwords

In order to change your password for any reason, you must telnet directly into Polaris. Open your browser window and type: telnet://polaris.umuc.edu into the Netsite/location. (Or in your Windows system, go to Start-->Run--> and type telnet polaris.umuc.edu into the dialog box).

Your password for Polaris (and any UNIX server) must contain 6-8 characters, including at least 2 alphabetic characters and at least 1 non-alphabetic character (usually a numeral) within the first 6 characters. The passwords should contain NO spaces. UNIX systems are case-sensitive: uppercase and lowercase letters are recognized as separate characters.

When you change your password, it must differ from the previous one by at least three character positions. Once you change your password, you cannot change it again for at least a day.

Passwords for Polaris accounts expire every 180 days. If you use an FTP program to access Polaris, you may get no response at all, or you may receive a message like, "PASS (hidden) 530 login incorrect! login failure so quitting." If this is the case, you will need to change your Polaris password.

If Your Unsure Of Your Polaris Password or Your Password No Longer Works

If you can not log into you Polaris account by via Telnet, or you do not remember your Polaris password, you will have to change your password using your MyUMUC login and password. If you do not know your MyUMUC login and password, please contact 1-877-868-2847.
  • (Re)connect to Polaris via telnet.
  • At the login: prompt, type chgpass.

This command will direct the system to reset your password to a computer-generated one. First, however, the system must identify you, so it will prompt you to enter your MyUMUC login and password.

  1. your MyUMUC portal username (NOT your Polaris username)
  2. your MyUMUC portal password (This is case sensitive: be sure to enter uppercase letters correctly; the system will not display your password as you type it.)
If you don't know your MyUMUC portal username and password, contact helpdesk@umuc.edu.

After you provide this information, your Polaris account username and a temporary password will be displayed. Make careful note of your login and temporary password displayed on-screen before exiting the system.

Reconnect to Polaris and log in using the login and temporary password the system just gave you. The system will then prompt you to change your temporary password to a new password.

At the "Choose a new password. Enter OLD password:" prompt, re-enter the temporary password you were assigned.

At the "NEW password:" prompt, enter a new password of your choice. Passwords must be between 6 and 8 characters in length, and must contain one non-alphabetic character.

At the "Re-enter NEW password:" prompt, retype your new password.

Note for UMUC staff members: chgpass now works for all Polaris users, so follow the directions above if your password has expired and you are no longer able to login with your old username and password.
