Best Instructional Practices for Design and Interaction

What practical research is occurring here at UMUC that provides evidence for effective teaching and learning and how can these findings help you in your own teaching?

This track draws on the latest phase of the Office of Evaluation, Research, and Grants' (OERG) Best Online Instructional Practices Study (BOIPS) to provide strategies from UMUC faculty that can guide faculty in improving design of assignments and assessments, as well as techniques for more effective interaction and feedback. Findings from the study that reflect the importance of design, interaction, and the integration of the various aspects of a course will be shared with participants. Strategies that are correlated with better student retention will also be highlighted.

Objectives for this track:

  • To acquaint participants with the latest findings from the Best Online Instructional Practices Study (BOIPS)
  • To identify some effective instructional practices and strategies for implementing them
  • To create an inventory of teaching practices for each participant and be able to review these practices in light of the Institute group as well as the BOIPS participants
  • To apply an interaction rubric to evaluate a sample course in one's general discipline
  • To revise a sample course so as to increase the overall level of interaction
